buy.com’s Marketplace Item scam

i used to love buy.com because if their competitive prices, free shipping & no tax to NY. unfortunately i just got off the phone with their customer service after canceling the order for $2,300 (which was  a hassle to cancel).

basically buy.com stooped selling majority of the items they list and are outsourcing it to other vendors under “Marketplace Item” umbrella.  so for example, if you place an order for Bose Lifestyle system for $1,999, you ‘ll get surprised when you get a bill, because that item is listed as “Marketplace Item” and is actually shipped from 6ave Electronics, NOT buy.com.  because 6ave Electronics is located in New York … yes they will charge you tax (if you live there) and shipping. all of the sudden it becomes cheaper to just go to near by Best Buy and get it there, less shipping!

very disappointing but unfortunately it’s the “sing of the times”. i guess buy.com didn’t make enough money with they rock bottom prices and decided to outsource those which didn’t make them money. thus they became a glorified product search engine (e.g. google shopping).

the internet perks of free shipping and no tax are kinda “too good to be true” to being with and we might see more and more .coms taking the outsourcing option. :(
